| Pure Gospel Acts 2:40 After the dramatic death of Jesus, Peter's scandalous denial, and the post-resurrection teaching of Christ, Peter preaches the Gospel to a crowd of thousands in Jerusalem. His message on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2) may be the most courageous sermon of all time. Luke, the doctor and historian who recorded the events in the book of Acts, includes only the CliffsNotes version of Peter's sermon (Acts 2:40). Even in this abbreviated form Peter argues 4 points: 1. The words and works of the Apostles were empowered by the Spirit of God (vs. 14-21) 2. The truthfulness of the death and resurrection of Jesus (vs. 22-28) 3. The Old Testament confirmation of Christ's resurrection through the prophecy of King David (vs. 29-35) 4. The proclamation of Jesus as Lord and Christ, and the condemnation of all people as responsible for his death (vs. 36) Peter's message was the seed of the Organic Church, the church of Jesus Christ in its purest form, a church unhindered by novelties and tradition, and intentional about the glory of God, the promotion of the Gospel and the maturity of believers. Acts 2:40-47 tells of the Organic Church's commitment to a pure Gospel. This Sunday we will learn how the pure Gospel saves us from a corrupt generation. |
